Back in the saddle?
Or at least looking at the horse.
Two proposals are packed and ready to go to my editor tomorrow (along with a big envelope of books for a Katrina fund-raiser sponsored by All About Romance *). This after more weeks than I want to admit of treading water, creatively speaking. It seemed as though every time I’d come up with an idea, I’d see a movie or read a book that was so similar it was freaky. Not to mention depressing. I’m beginning to think maybe I should just stop reading or watching movies, that way I won’t know if I’m inadvertently ripping somebody else off. Works for me. Or would, if I could stop watching movies or reading, neither of which is gonna happen in this lifetime.
Speaking of movies — watched SIN CITY the other night. There’s a case where I can say, yeah, okay, I got it, and I appreciated the technical stuff and how faithful the director was to the original graphic novels and all that. But two hours of non-stop weirdness and gruesomeness just isn’t my cuppa, y’know? I don’t care if the blood was yellow. There were so many ick factors in this one, I lost count.
Then we watched MONSOON WEDDING (which I’d known about forever but just never go around to seeing), which was great fun. Even if the switching back and forth between heavily accented English and subtitled. . .Parsi? I honestly don’t know. . .was a bit challenging for this poor old brain. And we watched that because we’d seen BRIDE AND PREJUDICE the week before, which was indeed a Bollywoodized version of the Austen novel, although I suspect Ms. Jane wouldn’t have been particularly thrilled with this adaptation. Silly is the word that comes to mind.
* I’m (or rather AAR is) auctioning off signed copies of HANGING BY A THREAD, LOOSE SCREWS and a complete set of the Men of Mayes County books, including a certificate so the winner can get a copy of the newest, and last, one out next March. All proceeds go to the Red Cross.
